The network for the online banking project had to satisfy a number of needs.
Reliability
- Selecting reliable hardware components. We used Intel Server Boards for the mother boards in the web and database servers and Cisco networking equipment.
- Installing reliable software components. We ran Redhat Linux (Later switched to Gentoo) and maintained uptimes greater than 400 days per machine.
- Removed all single points of failure from the network. Every component had a backup and a failure plan. No single component outage could cause a network outage. Even a power interruption would be localized to either the Left or Right side of the network, leaving the other side undisturbed.
Security
- Implementing a strict set of firewall rules
- Running an intrusion detection system on the web and database servers
- Monitoring security mailing lists for applicable security threats
- Removed all unnecessary processes and daemons from all servers
